This position is responsible for applying engineering knowledge and best practices to manage the Global Mechanical Design Engineering (NPD), Drivetrain / Motor Engineering, Packaging Engineering, Advanced Materials, Design Simulations and Tooling functional areas that develop and implement projects for all Chamberlain Global business units. The projects could consist of New Product Development, Productivity, Sustaining, Advanced Development and Tooling. A successful incumbent will have the ability to lead CG's global mechanical design team, solve complex mechanical engineering problems, incubate advanced sustainable materials into product designs, make our designs suitable for advanced manufacturing methods, drive simulation based designs and testing, co-innovate with strategic technology partners, recognize gaps in process and will develop and recommend new techniques to support innovative solutions.
This position is responsible for the planning of resources, project planning and technical integrity of mechanical projects with for multiple teams in the line of business they are assigned. The manager will plan and track these projects to ensure they are completed on schedule, meets quality standards, and done in accordance with the mechanical engineering's community of practice, tools, methodologies, and processes.
This position is responsible for the recruiting, onboarding, retaining, scheduling, and the direct supervision of mechanical engineers. This position will participates in the organizational leadership review, resource planning, and budget planning processes for the mechanical engineering. This position requires frequent communication and collaboration with Line of Business Engineering Directors, Marketing leadership, Manufacturing leadership, Sourcing leadership and other engineering departments. Additionally, this position is required to identify and build strategic design partners and maintain external relationships with recruiters, suppliers, partners, and others as required.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for on time, on budget, and quality functional project execution for New Product Developments for all CG business units
  • Accountable for functional plans, including resource effort, schedule estimates and costs, for new and active NPD projects across all business units. Ensure alignment with Business Units and functional strategies
  • Define functional technology strategy of NPD projects, Incubation of advanced materials, simulation based designs and design validation maturity; identify, plan and execute 1-3 year technology roadmap that will enhance the product roadmap
  • Accountable for driving mechanical designs to adapt advanced manufacturing methods for high volume products by working closely with CG Manufacturing and quality functions
  • Responsible for the functional design approach and technical feasibility for multiple projects, with input from key technical personnel across multiple teams
  • Define the functional or business processes that affect mechanical design services; creates and sets goals for key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives within functional areas or business units; lead a functional or business area community of practice, a group of staff in similar roles that drives best practices, peer reviews, and common processes to ensure quality work products.
  • Accountable for identification & building strategic tech partners for mechanical design services by working closely with CG sourcing and manufacturing functions
  • Responsible for annual expense and capital budget planning and tracking for NPD mechanical design teams; ensure alignment with Business Unit and functional department budget
  • Identify core competencies and skill requirements for mechanical design, advanced simulation and advanced materials
  • Review and approve the functional deliverables and engineering change notices (ECNs) for all direct reports
  • Ensure design quality by serving as Chair or member of the design review committee; as Chair, own ME design review process
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules; managers should also ensure compliance across their teams.
  • Protect Chamberlain Group's reputation by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed.


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree
  • 15+ years of job-related experience
  • 8+ years of experience leading a team of engineers or technical staff.
  • Experience in delivering end-to-end high-volume products into market (Idea to market launch)
  • Ability to train a technical staff in functional area on functional subjects, process and tools; Needs a good understanding of Mechanical Engineering including 3D modeling, Finite Element Analysis, design and testing
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time domestically and internationally


Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification strongly preferred; Scrum master certification
  • Experience in project management; Experience in outsourcing designs
  • Ability to run a Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Value Analysis Value Engineering (VA/VE) event; In depth knowledge of Waterfall and Agile development processes
  • Proficiency in second language (i.e. Spanish, Mandarin)
